There are so many merchandisers with huge quantities of products you can choose from. Our society has been pushed into the mindset of 'getting the latest thing'. The fashion industry keeps the wheel turning by telling us that with each season we must get rid of the 'old' and buy the new. With this demand, we have forsaken quality, longevity, and self sustenance for cheaper, faster production that falls under the regulation of countries not of our own. These countries rarely share the same value system as we do and often use practices that would never be allowed on United States soil. However, by this, production is high and pricing is competitive. Production is kept at a massive rate to fulfill demand and then some. Factory waste and post consumer waste is huge. Much of the merchandise is never purchased, and after every attempt to 'clearance' the items, many are thrown away. As we've all seen in the news of late, items produced overseas frequently contain chemicals and materials which are harmful to the consumer. Clothing is treated with formaldehyde to prevent mildew. Children's clothing made in China has been tested for formaldehyde content and been shown to contain up to 900x the safe level. Lead is still used in much of the production in China, later discovered in our toys, and home decor, dishes, lunchboxes...And what of products made for animals? If the safety regulation of products for people is so low, how could we possibly trust the safety of our pets to products made in China and other poorly regulated countries. And what of the sweatshops? How can we ethically keep supporting an industry whose practices are so much against the beliefs and standards of our own? We've seen the news reels, watched the documentaries. We've heard about explosions in factories that were full of children working, tween-age girls working 16 hour days for pennies to send their families hundreds of miles away. We know of the abuse that often comes with being born female in these patriarchal societies. We know how they skin dogs alive to put their fur on coats to sell in America. Look around for yourselves and you will find that the majority of pet fashion items are made in countries where dogs and cats are considered food, not pets. Americans sacrifice their own values and morals every time we choose their products over ours. We don't need to. We don't even want to. But we do. Make the choice to preserve your values.
